She sits dangling perfectly wrapped and held in ribbons of support tied throughout the pelvic bowl (you have 14 ligaments in your pelvis- didn’t you know!). She is a beacon of hormone signals, energy, creativity and life. That is, until she falls, tips and tumbles getting tangled and lost in those ribbons that once held her. She is your Uterus and her only way to let you know that she needs a lift is through one of the many dysfunctions that women struggle with but are told “are normal”. To hear her cries you must understand how she works.
In short, the Uterus is the female sex organ where implantation of a hopeful fetus takes place and will soon grow to encompass the baby inside the expecting mother. She is the size and shape of a small pear, weighs around 4oz, sits upright with the cervix positioned over the vaginal opening and the fundus (the rounder part of the pear) leaning slightly forward. She rests between the bladder and rectum and is set with enough space so that when she swells during menses (up to twice her normal size) and begins to grow during pregnancy, she does not invade her neighbors. She relies on the structural tensegrity of the pelvic bowl, a stress free environment and proper nourishment to maintain proper function. When these elements fall out of line from stress, accidents and traumas of all sorts, so will she, and here is how she will let you know.
- Painful Menstruation and Ovulation
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Menstrual cycles that are clotty and dark in color
- Hormone imbalances (depression, anxiety, early menopause, difficult menopause)
- Chronic low back pain especially during menstruation
- Chronic constipation with no relief from diet and lifestyle change
- Chronic bladder and yeast infections
- Endometriosis, ovarian cysts/polyps
- Fertility challenges and miscarriages
- Unexplained pelvic pain
These debilitating symptoms have been largely considered to be the “norm” for women and that we are cursed with painful monthly cycles and hormones. I am here to say- I know that the body was created to be in balance and a woman’s body was created to produce life, not pain. (If your liver was flipped around your doctor probably wouldn’t say “its normal, deal with it”). So, the question is, how do we restore our Uterus back to being balanced and dangling with proper support in our pelvic bowl?
- Maya Abdominal Massage, particularly the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage™ is one of the most profound ways to correct a displaced uterus.
- Healing emotional trauma, especially sexual trauma.
- Working with a pelvic floor specialist. I HIGHLY recommend reading “Wild Feminine” for a thorough guide in the emotional vibration of our pelvic bowl.
- Making lifestyle and dietary changes to support healthy hormones and reduce stress.
The journey back to balance can be very emotional as you come back into your full, healthy and vibrant self. If you think you may have misplaced your Uterus please contact me, or a Maya Abdominal practitioner in your area for further guidance.

I have 6 out of the 10 mentioned… I have had horrible periods since the beginning, I have had a few visits to the ER to get a demerol shot because the pain was so bad, from passing out, to vomiting and on one occasion i had a cysts that burst. I do not have any children and have never been pregnant. My sister only found out that she has this when she was giving birth to her first born, very painful birth and ended up having to do an emergency c-section. We are twins so i wondering if this is the reasons for my issues as well. Anything that will help with the painful heavy periods, and lately seemingly hormone imbalances. I just went to the doc a few days ago to get my hormones checked because of some symptoms i have been experiencing. I am about to hit 31 one so i thought it was just part of getting older, but wow your list really hit home. The following is what i experience.
Painful Menstruation and Ovulation
Menstrual cycles that are clotty and dark in color
Hormone imbalances (depression, anxiety, early menopause, difficult menopause)
Chronic low back pain especially during menstruation
Endometriosis, ovarian cysts/polyps
Unexplained pelvic pain
Hi, my name is Hunter and I am a 16 year old female and I just found out my mother had had a “flipped” uterus. I’m not quite sure if she meant tipped though, but what I do know is is that she said she believes the only way she could have gotten pregnant was because when having intercourse she was laying on her stomach rather than her back. I also have a couple other questions, such as could this be a genetic thing? Could I possibly have this condition? And if I could would there be a way to find out? When reading your 10 symptoms I recognized that I had a majority of these symptoms, except for the miscarriages (my mother had one after her first child and then she had my other brother and then me.) Thank you for your consideration. I’m not quite sure if you’ll be able to answer these questions, but if you can that would be great!
Hi there! I have tipped uterus (I made and ultrasound) and so does my mom. It’s like being lefthanded, the doctor explained to me. There’s a chance you have it when your mom has it too. My mom had three kids, all natural deliveries, no c section. We do have something in common next to the type o uterus: the days before the period, we noticed we both get constipated. When the period comes, we get all fine again. Hope that helps.
I’m same as you.. My mum my grandma and my aunty have this.. And so do I .. My aunty and my mum both have endometriosis and I get very constipated before menstruation .. Back pain and irregular periods and pelvic pain .. I have had 3 babies but also 3 misscarages , it’s genetic I think
Please help me!!

I know I have a retrovert uterus because I found out when I was pregnant and went for my first scan, the scan showed my uterus pointing the other away, I have all of those symptoms especially when its that time of the month i suffer from severe lower back pain so badly i can barely stand upright and it feels like a pressure weighing down in my back side area, I wish I could fix it and don’t think massaging can help
Hey, I’m 23 have birthed two healthy boys and lost my third baby two months ago. I was told with my first son my uterus is tilted but because I had both my boys naturally I thought I’d never have issues. But then after having my first son I started having new things happen that didn’t happen before and my sex life became… We’ll just say difficult. When I lost my third baby she said because I’m young and healthy I shouldn’t have problems with trying one more time. Moms out there, with a tilted uterus do you think we lost a baby because its tilted? When I’m dilated and they’re trying to check me they have to do it a certain way so it’s accurate and it hurts like hell! My second son heart beat almost stopped completely trying to birth him though. It makes me worry about having a third one at all….
I have had 3 babies born .. (First was an emergency as his heart had stopped) and I have also had 3 misscarages (I was 3 months pregnant when I lost the first baby) I don’t know if it is to do with the uterus or not.. But I am so sorry for your loss xxx
The doctors have only just told me I have a tilted womb…I’m 22 and have been suffering since I was 11. I have ALL of the above symptoms, I have even had operations to investigate endometriosis, I’ve been diagnosed with several ‘mental illnesses’ (depression &anxiety, psychosis, DP/DR), I’ve unfortunately suffered a miscarriage. The doctors have never explained that a tilted womb can cause all these things. Thank you for your article, it has made me feel normal! I’m going to investigate further.
It’s a pleasure to find someone who can think so clearly
